Cormorant (Great Cormorant) Phalacrocorax carbo
Historically British Cormorants were coastal birds nesting on cliffs and only occasionally found inland. In the last 30 years or so they have become very numerous on inland lakes and large colonies breed in trees at several locations in south-east England. They are much despised by anglers, for the damage they apparently do to their fish stock, and licenses have been issued to fishermen to control Cormorants at many sites.

African birds of the race lucidus are sometimes treated as a distinct species, White-breasted Cormorant. Birds resembling this race occasionally appear in southern Europe.
