Cory's Shearwater (Scopoli's Shearwater) Calonectris diomedea
There are two subspecies of Cory's Shearwater which occur in European waters and the two forms are now often regarded as separate species:
- The Atlantic form (race borealis) is the one which most often occurs in British waters, mainly as a late summer migrant off south-western coasts but occasionally elsewhere (it's recorded annually off Norfolk).
- The Mediterranean form diomedea (known as Scopoli's Shearwater) has recently been identified in British waters but is believed to be very rare here.
In addition Cape Verde Shearwater, form edwardsii, is perhaps a potential vagrant in European waters.
The following photos were taken in the Mediterranean and are therefore Scopoli's Shearwaters.
