Ferruginous Duck x Pochard Aythya nyroca x Anas ferina

This hybrid is responsible for a few erroneous claims of Ferruginous Duck in the UK - they seem to turn up here nearly as often as pure Ferruginous Ducks. Some can apparently be more similar to Redhead in appearance.

juvenile/first-winter Ferruginous Duck x Pochard hybrid (with Ferruginous Duck), Cockshoot Broad (Norfolk, UK), 12th November 2011 - the accompanying Ferruginous Duck, a long-staying bird that is resident in the Broads and may well be an escape, is assumed to be its parent. That bird is itself considered to be a hybrid (presumably not a first-generation hybrid) although I am personally not convinced it isn't a pure Ferruginous Duck - see my blog post

Ferruginous Duck x Pochard hybrid, Ranworth Broad (Norfolk, UK), 2nd December 2012 - presumably the same bird as above, still accompanying a pure (or at least purer) female Ferruginous Duck

female Ferruginous Duck x Pochard hybrid, Burnham Overy (Norfolk, UK), 14th March 2015

I originally had the next bird down as Pochard x Tufted Duck, but it differed from other female Pochard x Tufted Ducks photographed by others in having darker plumage on the body and lacking the obvious pale around the base of the bill. Joern suggested Pochard x Ferruginous Duck as a possible ID at the time but I have been slow to be persuaded. The absence of any white under the tail and the lack of any ferruginous tones put me off but seeing the last bird above has tipped me in favour of Ferruginous parentage, despite the dark under tail. I haven't changed the filenames yet so when you click on the images you may still see Pochard x Tufted Duck.

possible female Pochard x Ferruginous Duck hybrid, St Gothian Sands (Cornwall, UK), 19th November 2013 - is the lack of white under the tail a problem for this ID?
