Little Grebe (Dabchick) Tachybaptus ruficollis
A common species throughout most of the UK (except the north of Scotland). Very much a freshwater species - although sometimes seen in harbours this species is very rarely observed on the open sea.

This species has a wide distribution across Europe, Asia and Africa. Eastern birds are quite distinct but African birds are very similar to European ones, although in flight they show distinctly more white in the secondaries. The following one is an African bird of the race capensis.
