Osprey Pandion haliaetus
This species is doing well in its UK breeding range which is almost exclusively in Scotland. Though Scottish breeders presumably migrate through England many of the passage migrants seen here are probably of Scandinavian origin.
Despite the fact that the Scottish population was going from strength to strength and has already expanded into England (at least one pair breeding regularly in the Lake District), and despite the fact that birds were beginning to over-summer in southern England with increasing frequency, sometimes even showing signs of nesting, a decision was made to reintroduce this species in England. Birds were released at Rutland Water in Leicestershire and have been breeding there each summer since 2001 (two nests in 2007).
The species has a wide global distribution and the following photos relate to the North American subspecies carolinensis. This race differs from the European birds of the nominate race haliaetus in having more heavily-pigmented upperparts and a less distinct (or absent) breast band.
