Vevlet Scoter Melanitta fusca

Small numbers winter off the coast of Norfolk but they are more numerous further north where my only worthwhile photos so far were taken.

Inland in Norfolk they are very rare so it was a great surprise to find this fine drake at Wroxham Broad one evening. Unfortunately it was nearly dark and the unadjusted photos were all-black - some extreme photoshopping has just about managed to bring out a recognisable form...

The North American and east Asian forms of Velvet Scoter, known as White-winged Scoter, have been recently split as separate species.
